Northern Territory's Chief Health Officer Hugh Heggie has issued a COVID-19 hotspot declaration for the Greater Melbourne area effective from 7:30pm (ACST) Thursday.

Anyone arriving from Greater Melbourne after that time, which falls in line with the 8:00pm Victorian (AEST) lockdown, will be directed into 14 days of supervised quarantine at their own expense.

This includes anyone who has been in the Greater Melbourne area since July 27.

Anyone already in the NT who has been in Greater Melbourne area since July 27 has been directed to check Victorian exposure sites online and follow the quarantine directions listed.

Dr Heggie's reasoning for not declaring the entire state of Victoria a hotspot is expected to be clarified on Friday.

Last Saturday, the NT declared parts of south-east Queensland hotspots after the region entered a snap lockdown.

The NT government currently has hotspots declared in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

NT's Chief Minister Michael Gunner will provide a general COVID-19 update at 9:30am Friday, August 6.

Dr Heggie said these conditions were in place to keep the community safe.

"The Delta strain of COVID-19 is more infectious," he said.

"The vaccine is the best prevention we have against the virus, and I urge you to book your COVID-19 vaccine online now."
