Belfast weather warning issued for wind and rain

A yellow weather warning has been issued for wind and rain across Northern Ireland.

Despite a sunny Monday, the region is set to be battered by winds of up to 70mph on Tuesday afternoon with gusts expected to start this evening.

The Met Office has warned of:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

They also said heavy rain could bring some flooding and travel disruption.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "A spell of windy weather is expected across Northern Ireland and Scotland during Tuesday.

"Strong south to south-westerly winds will gust 50-60 mph at times, but there is the potential for gusts of 70 mph for eastern coastal districts of Northern Ireland, the Western Isles and perhaps the Moray coast during the morning.

"Winds will ease across much of Northern Ireland and the north-western half of Scotland during the afternoon."

They added the weather warning for wind is in place from 2am until 6pm.

Meanwhile "heavy rain bringing some flooding and travel disruption" is predicted from 3am on Tuesday until 11.59pm.

The spokesperson said: "Rain will become persistent and heavy at times from the early hours of Tuesday, lasting through the day before dying out late in the evening. Accumulations of 15-30 mm are expected widely with 40-50 mm in a few places, mainly in the south, while the Mourne Mountains could see over 60 mm.

"With saturated ground this will be sufficient to bring some flooding in places. The rain will be accompanied by strong winds especially overnight and into the morning which could bring additional impacts, for which a separate wind warning has been issued."
