Northampton targeting Sunderland as Cobblers look to build on Gillingham win

Northampton manager Keith Curle has urged his side to build on their win over Gillingham when they take on Sunderland on Saturday.

The Cobblers host the Black Cats in what will be Lee Johnson's side's first game for almost three weeks following a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

And while the Wearsiders are favourites this weekend, Curle wants to see a repeat performance from his side following their midweek 3-1 win over Gillingham.

Sunderland are unbeaten on their travels this season in the league, but former Manchester City defender Curle is looking to end that run.

“We look forward to every game we play in and every game will throw up different challenges,” he said.

“It was a pleasing result against Gillingham on Tuesday night and a result that showed good character in the changing room.

“We have been on the wrong side of some results recently but we showed that we can stand up to the challenge and against Gillingham we did the ugly side of the game well."

That win ended a run of four straight League One defeats for Northampton, and while form is hard to gauge following Sunderland's recent lay-off, Curle feels his side have something to build on.

“We have some good characters in the squad, we showed that on Tuesday night and it’s something we have to build on," he added.

“As I’ve said before there are going to be a lot of twists and turns between now and the end of the season and some surprising results but the only result I concern myself with is our own."
