MORE than 100 people who have disabilities or face barriers to employment have been helped into work in the past year thanks to North Lanarkshire’s supported enterprise service.
The milestone was marked with a celebration event entitled Steps to Success, attended by service users, relatives, carers, councillors, schools and business representatives. Now those behind the scheme are redoubling their efforts to encourage more businesses to join the scheme and provide job opportunities.
The service provides vital support for people with disabilities or dealing with challenges in getting into work, by matching people to suitable posts and providing on-the-job training plus ongoing assistance to both worker and employer.
Enterprise manager Yvonne Weir said of the celebration event, where those involved in the initiative shared their experiences: “It was inspirational to hear how employment and the support clients have received has transformed their lives and those of their families and carers.
“It was also great to hear how local businesses and managers who employ our clients, and their staff, have had such positive experiences using our service.
“Supported enterprise is an important element of the council’s ambition to bring about economic growth, ensuring that by supporting people with disabilities and those facing barriers to sustainable employment, no-one is left behind.”
