North Lanarkshire Council approves plans for two new schools at Ravenscraig

People are being asked for their views on two new primary schools that are being built in Ravenscraig.

Plans for the two buildings have been approved by North Lanarkshire Council.

And parents/carers, pupils, parent councils and staff are being asked for their thoughts on the proposals, which have been developed to accommodate additional demand.

There has been significant levels of house building in the area and the new schools – one denominational and the other non-denominational – would ensure youngsters have access to schools close to where they live.

Councillor Frank McNally, convener of education and families for the council, said: “Ravenscraig is thriving with thousands of new homes, a college, a sports facility, new businesses and a public park which will open in the autumn.

“These exciting proposals to create new high-quality schools for our young people will further enhance the area.

“It illustrates our drive to transform communities across North Lanarkshire.”

The consultation will run for a total of 56 days, including 30 school days, beginning today (March 2) and finishing on April 26.

Public meetings will be held at:

■ Non-denominational consultation: Muir Street Primary on March 30, at 7pm; and at Keir Hardie Primary School on March 31 at 7pm.

■ Denominational consultation: Our Lady and St Francis Primary School on March 25 at 7pm.

Other reasons for the proposals are:

■ To promote community integration between the residents of the new development and the existing Motherwell area;

■ The capital investment will provide local opportunities for economic investment will provide local opportunities for economic investment; and

■ To improve health, wellbeing and air quality through a reduction in school transport.

At the end of the consultation process, two reports will be prepared for North Lanarkshire Council detailing all responses received, summaries of their content and a statement from Education Scotland on the educational aspects of the proposal.

The reports are expected to be ready by the end of June and copies will be available in local schools, libraries and through the council’s website.

Further information on the proposals can be obtained by writing to School Consultations, Education & Families, Windmillhill Street, Motherwell, ML1 1AB; or by calling 01236 812596.

All interested parties are invited to submit their comments on or before April 26.
