North East set for chilly but sunny start to week as temperatures plummet below freezing

Temperatures in the North East could drop to as low as -5 degrees as forecasters predict a chilly but sunny start to the week.

Following last week's heavy rain, residents can look forward to clearer skies with showers only threatening coastal areas.

The colder weather will also bring patches of overnight frost and fog , particularly in northern areas towards Scotland, as well as ice on pavements and roads.

Sophie Yeomans, meteorologist at the Met Office, said that during the days at the beginning of the week the temperature is likely to hover just above freezing, with highs of about five degrees on Monday in the Newcastle area and getting colder in northern parts of the region and also in higher areas like Consett.

Overnight temperatures are likely to fall into the minus figures until later on Tuesday when it will become slightly warmer due to the cloud cover.

Ms Yeomans said: "It will be a cold start on Sunday, with it being the start of December as we get into the winter season.

"There will be patches of frost overnight but it will be largely dry and sunny. You might get one or two showers off the coast.

"As we head into Monday it will be a chilly start to the working week, mainly dry and clear in Newcastle. Further north up to the borders and Scotland there will be more frost around.

"On Tuesday again there might be a little bit of cloud around but it is likely to remain dry with sunny spells. "

The colder weather follows the yellow warning for rain that many areas of the North East experienced last week, with as much as 20mm of rain falling on Wednesday.
