After two days of record-breaking heatwave temperatures, the Met Office's forecast for Wednesday and Thursday might provide some respite for many in the North East - though it'll remain warm for much of the week according to the experts, it'll feel a bit more like a normal British summer.
For the past two days, the temperature has been well over 30°C - and Newcastle Council figures have highlighted how recent days prove "the climate emergency is here and it is now". With the extreme weather causing a risk to life, a number of serious health warnings have been issued. There have also been concerns about people swimming in rivers or the sea to cool off, after a number of deaths including a teenage boy in the River Tyne near Ovingham in Northumberland.
Thankfully, the heat is set to return to more recognisable levels on Wednesday. It will actually continue to cool down from a peak of 24°C at midnight, according to the Met Office. And during the day the temperature is set to hover between 17 and 20°C.

The long-range forecast for Newcastle over the coming days also reflects a similar prediction - warm, sunny with some cloud and a max temperature of not much over 20°C.
The official forecast for Wednesday in the city is: "Likely a sunny morning, and less hot. Increasing amounts of cloud later will further peg back temperatures. There will be a chance of a few showers, especially in the west. Maximum temperature 24 °C."
