North East Company of the Year Cleveland Containers adds to trophy cabinet

The winner of the main prize at this year’s North East Business Awards has added to its trophy cabinet with two more gongs at a national ceremony.

Cleveland Containers, which is based in Stockton-on-Tees, took home a gold and a silver prize at the SME National Business Awards 2022. The firm, which was founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife Johnathan and Jane Bulmer, won silver in the Family Business of the Year category, and then received gold in the High Growth Business of the Year category.

The company, which was launched in 2011, recorded first-year turnover of £1.1m but has since grown to deliver hundreds of containers every week, operating out of more than 15 depots across the UK.

In June it was named Teesside Company of the Year, and the following day announced it had secured a minority investment from private equity firm LDC to help steer the firm through the next stage of its growth. It took the overall North East Company of the Year prize in September.

Mr Bulmer said: “We’re exceptionally proud of being a family firm; my wife and I still manage the business and our son James is a long-serving member of the sales team. We’ve also seen fantastic growth recently; in the financial year ending February 2022, we achieved a record-breaking turnover of £60m, growing the business by 65.2% in just one year and welcoming new additions to all departments.”

The firm has recently announced the launch of a new group, Cleveland, which is made up of Cleveland Containers along with two new divisions, Cleveland Hire and Cleveland Modular. The new divisions means the group will now be able to offer a full turnkey service for construction sites, providing all essential site set-up units and accessories including offices, canteens, toilets, furniture, temporary power supplies, fencing and lighting.

Mr Bulmer said: “These awards round off an incredible year of recognition for our company, having been shortlisted for all 16 awards that we’ve entered, and winning six, including North East Company of the Year. Closing such an eventful year with our first ever national award win is incredible. Jane and I are so proud of the entire team for what we have all achieved together and we are all still on one exciting journey.”
