A north suburban man was sentenced to nearly three decades in federal prison for sex trafficking charges involving a 15-year-old girl.
U.S. District Judge Gary Feinerman sentenced 32-year-old Deronarte Norwood to 27 years and six months in prison May 30, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
A federal jury last year convicted Norwood, who lives in North Chicago, of attempting to transport a minor from Illinois to Wisconsin to engage in prostitution, prosecutors said.
“Defendant is among those criminals who destroy the lives of our communities’ most precious resource – children,” Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicole M. Kim and Abigail Peluso wrote in a sentencing memorandum. “Defendant was a predator who targeted, assaulted, and repeatedly exploited [the victim].”
Norwood exploited the girl in online ads offering sex for money after meeting her in 2015 and sent her to meet clients in hotel rooms, the U.S. attorney’s office said. He kept all the money she made.
He was arrested in Waukegan in 2016 and has been in custody ever since, prosecutors said.
Norwood remains held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records.
