North Belfast woman opens therapy gym for children after being diagnosed with ADHD

A North Belfast woman has opened a 'Physical Training Therapy Gym' for children with complex needs.

Paula O'Malley, 34, says the Antrim Road venture was inspired by her own experience of ADHD and her children's diagnoses of ADHD and Autism.

She told Belfast Live that the new space at POPTT Kidz is an inclusive and fun environment for children aged 5-15 to come and rewind.

"There's nothing of the sort here for children so this is just so needed. I hope that it will help to promote good mental and physical health among children and young adults," she said.

"We have already had great interest in the classes and I feel it is going to be of great benefit to North Belfast and the surrounding areas.

"The kids were so excited to have the Lord Mayor of Belfast attending to cut our ribbon this morning and to officially open for us. They all worked so hard and gave so much effort. We are all so proud.

"The children told us that they love to workout because it 'makes them feel strong and builds up their confidence.'

Some of them were very shy at first but once we got into things they came round and began to enjoy themselves. They really did just give it their all and with a smile on their face - which is what it's all about.

"Once we finish our workouts in the classes, we then go into our yoga room for healthy snack and get to chat to the other kids and make friends.

"This is my way of trying to help promote mental wellbeing and physical health amongst children and just want to appeal to anyone that is interested in the classes every week to get in contact with me.

"We open our doors to any child, no matter what their needs or abilities are and want this space to be used as a way to wind down and have fun at the same time."
