North Belfast community hold vigil in response to tragedies in recent weeks

Hundreds gathered at Holy Cross Church in Ardoyne last night to raise awareness around mental health and support services.

The candlelit vigil follows weeks of tragedies in the area and highlighted help for those who find themselves in times of despair.

Residents gathered at the Flax Centre at Ardoyne Avenue before walking side by side to Holy Cross Church by candlelight.

SDLP Councillor Paul McCusker said that the start of 2020 has been "very difficult" for families who have lost loved ones.

He told Belfast Live: "People from the local community here in Ardoyne and across North Belfast came together for a very serious issue around mental health . The start of the year has been very difficult for many who have lost loved ones and people in the community just felt that lack of hope.

"Tonight we seen hundreds of people come together to support each other here at Holy Cross through music and prayer. It went really well and also one of the things we seen was a lot of young people here which is really important to get that message across to young people around the help and support that's available.

"We often see the devastation in the news and in the communities where people have lost their lives through suicide and also through drug addiction as well. So the key thing about tonight was sharing that message that there is support there and there is help.

"There are many agencies here in North Belfast like PIPS, Lighthouse, Bridge of Hope and also Life Line which is 24 hours.

"But also ensuring that you are speaking to your family too and there's youth workers as well so there's many support groups around North Belfast that we need to encourage people to use but also to ensure that people are aware of how to access support and tonight was about that."

Anyone who needs to talk to someone about mental health issues can call the Samaritans on 116123 or Lifeline on 0808 808 8000.
