Noche UFC play-by-play and live results

LAS VEGAS – Noche UFC took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Women’s flyweight champion Alexa Grasso (16-3-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) took on former champ Valentina Shevchenko (23-4-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC), whom she submitted earlier this year to win the title, in the main event rematch. In the co-feature, Jack Della Maddalena (16-2 MMA, 6-0 UFC) put his unbeaten UFC record on the line against Kevin Holland (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC) at welterweight.

Josefine Knutsson vs. Marnic Mann

Round 1 – All right. Let’s get this Mexican Independence Day started with a little Sweden vs. U.S.A. action. Knutsson lands the first good combination – a crisp series of punches. Knutsson digs the body with a front kick and follows it up with a knee. Mann tries a hip toss and face-plants. Knutsson lands on top in half guard. They’re just kind of hanging out in this position. The crowd is booing. Knutsson rides the round out on top. 10-9 Knutsson.

Round 2 – Mann tries to tie Knutsson up. Against the fence, Knutsson slips away and drills Mann with a big knee to midsection. Knutsson clinches Mann against the fence. Knutsson sneaks a few more short shots in and breaks. Knutsson counters a Mann kick attempt with a left hand to the dome. That one stunned Mann, who tells Knutsson to bring more. Knutsson throws a combination and clinches Mann. Knutsson trips Mann to the canvas where she finishes the round top top (again). 20-17 Knutsson.

Round 3 – Knutsson lands a good combination. Mann counters with a hard punch but Knutsson again drills her with a knee to the midsection. Knutsson takes Mann down. Knutsson is significantly better than Mann seemingly everywhere but hasn’t been able to advance on the canvas. Knutsson lands some ground-and-pound but Mann cage-walks upward. Knutsson dumps Mann back to the canvas. Referee Chris Tognoni warns Mann about having toes in the cage. Knutsson makes it three for three on finishing the round out on top. MMA Junkie scores it 30-25 Knutsson.

Charlie Campbell vs. Alex Reyes

Round 1 – Man, you’ve got to feel good for Reyes. It’s been six years between appearances for him due to a spinal infection. But he’s back. Campbell doesn’t care though. He comes out aggressive with a body kick. Reyes catches the kick and boots Campbell’s plant leg. Campbell stumbles backward but regains his footing. Reyes kicks Campbell and is warned about a cup shot. Referee Mark Smith then warns both fighters about their fingers. Reyes lands another leg kick. They clinch and break. Campbell rocks Reyes with a hard combination. Campbell is in pursuit. He blasts Reyes to the canvas with a big punch. Reyes gets up and absorbs more punches. Campbell is battering him but Reyes is showing off a fantastic chin. Campbell won’t let him off the hook. Reyes lands a nice counter as Campbell tries a spinning back elbow, though. Campbell continues to remain aggressive, yet measured. Campbell drops Reyes again with a right hand and that’s it. A violent, dominant performance by Campbell.

Tracy Cortez vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius

Round 1 – Jasudavicius lands a leg kick, then a nice counterpunch. Cortez connects with a hard combination. Jasudavicius looks like the much bigger, longer fighter. Another Jasudavicius leg kick lands. Cortez connects with a hard pair of punches that wakes up the crowd. Jasudavicius has slowly slipped into struggle with the range. She started out well but now Cortez continues to find success. Jasudavicius moves in for a takedown and Cortez threatens a choke. Cortez lands a knee on the break, then a leg kick at distance. Jasudavicius tries to clinch again but Cortez evades and gets on her bike. Jasudavicius pushes forward and eats a left. They briefly clinch as the horn sounds. 10-9 Cortez.

Round 2 – Cortez picks up where she left off, evading the oncoming Jasudavicius, and proving to be the quicker fighter with counterpunches. Jasudavicius lands a combination, then grazes Cortez with a head kick. It seems like some of the wind is out of Cortez’s sails all of a sudden. Jasudavicius shoots and gets a takedown. Cortez gets up along the fence but Jasudavicius drags her right back down. Cortez gets back up and breaks. They’re back in the center. Both fighters appear to be tires. Cortez lands a nice combination before the round ends. 19-19.

Round 3 – Cortez fires a hard punch. After some insignificant exchanges, Jasudavicius ties Cortez up along the fence again. Cortez breaks away and lands a hard one-two combination. Jasudavicius throws a slow leg kick and Cortez feeds her a hard punch down the pipe. Jasudavicius has bruising below her left eye. They trade punches. Things are picking up. Jasudavicius briefly ties up Cortez, who breaks away again. Jasudavicius lands another knee to the body, then shoots for a takedown against the fence. That was a half-hearted attempt, though, and Cortez just shoves her away. They each land. Cortez lands two right hands. Jasudavicius cranks her to the body and lands a head kick. Cortez is pissed. She’s complaining about something. It seems Jasudavicius may have grabbed her braids on that kick. Jasudavicius says something back and Cortez cracks her. Jasudavicius moves in and lands her own punches. The horn sounds. That was a scrap. MMA Junkie scores it 29-28 Cortez.

Edgar Chairez vs. Daniel Lacerda

Round 1 – Chairez comes out with consecutive leg kicks. He bobs and weaves his head wildly before Lacerda even throws a strike. Lacerda lands a leg kick. Lacerda circles around Chairez. Lacerda takes Chairez down. Lacerda postures up in guard and lands some ground-and-pound. Chairez scrambles up and Lacerda drives him into the fence. Lacerda sticks his neck out and Chairez grabs for a choke. Referee Chris Tognoni is taking a close look. Lacerda is signaling he’s OK. But his arm drops thereafter and Tognoni jumps in. Lacerda immediately protests. It doesn’t appear he was out. Oh no. Here we go. All sorts of controversy but the fight is over. It appears they’re going to go to the replay. Standby…

Josh Fremd vs. Roman Kopylov

Round 1 – Fremd comes out jabbing. It’s a good move as Kopylov is bleeding already. Fremd hits Kopylov low. A brief timeout is called by referee Mark Smith and the action resumes. Fremd moves in lands a knee. Smith warns them about potential head clashes. Fremd rips a body kick. Kopylov returns with a harder, louder one. Kopylov fires a hard two-punch combination. Fremd goes with a low kick and Smith warns him about low strikes. Kopylov lands a leg and fires a hard right over the top. Kopylov blasts Fremd’s midsection again with another kick. Fremd shoots for a single leg. Kopylov denies him. Kopylov rips another body kick. It seems like he has a target. Kopylov lands a slick spinning back fist that cracks Fremd and follows it up with an uppercut as the horn sounds. It would’ve been interesting had their been another 20 seconds in the round. But there wasn’t. 10-9 Kopylov.

Round 2 – Kopylov lands a hard left hand and Fremd goes on rollerskates. He didn’t go down and appears to have regained his footing. This has slowly become a one-sided fight. Fremd wildly runs in for a combination and ends up on the canvas. Kopylov circles away as Fremd gets up disappointedly. Fremd has blood leaking from his nose. He shoots. They clinch and separate. Blood sprays out of Fremd’s nose as they break. Kopylov cranks him with a head kick. Fremd wobbles again. Moments later, Fremd tries a leaping attack that ends up kicking Kopylov square in the groin. Smith calls timeout. Kopylov is OK and the action resumes. Kopylov stuns Fremd again and charges forward. Fremd blows out his nose again and bloods goes everywhere. Kopylov connects on another uppercut. There is blood all over Fremd’s face and chest. He blocks a kick and appears to hurt his arm. Man, he’s all sorts of beat up. Kopylov punches the body and Fremd goes down in a heap. That’s it.

Loopy Godinez vs. Elise Reed

Round 1 – Godinez gets a big pop from the crowd, followed by “Loopy, Loopy, Loopy” chants. Godinez ducks under a punch from Reed and grabs her back along the fence. Reed eventually breaks away from Godinez. Back at distance, Godinez lands a left hand and Reed goes flying across the cage backward. Wow that was a wild reaction. Godinez pounces and grabs Reed’s back. Godinez seeking a rear-naked choke. Godinez pulls Reed back and switches to an armbar. Oh my goodnes. Reed’s arm is so extended. She’s fending off Godinez’s grip with her feet. Like, Reed is kicking Godinez’s hand away from the grip. Godinez twisting Reed’s arm all over the place. Wow how tough is Reed!! Reed eventually turns into Godinez and stands up. Godinez tries again for an armbar. The clock is winding down. Godinez torquing. The horn sounds. Wow. 10-8 Godinez.

Round 2 – Reed’s corner immediately asks her between rounds how her arm is. Reed responds it’s “good.” What a savage. Anyway, she was dominated in that round, which is the most important takeaway from Round 1. Godinez fairly quickly drags Reed to the canvas. Reed eventually gets up. Godinez immediately feeds Reed a series of punches and then slams her on her head. After a brief north-south moment on the ground, Reed gets up and Godinez slams her back down again. Godinez works to the back and sinks in a rear-naked choke. Reed is flattened out. There’s the tap. Godinez with a dominant submission victory.

Kyle Nelson vs. Fernando Padilla

Round 1 – Padilla is all business, mean-mugging and talking to the camera during the introductions. Nelson kicks his leg to start. Padilla jabs and Nelson’s bleeding already from the bridge of his nose. Nelson lands a hard jab. Padilla boots Nelson in the groin and scrambles the cup. Referee Chris Tognoni calls timeout. Nelson adjusts himself and the action resumes. Padilla throws a fancy kick which gets oohs and aahs out of the crowd. Nelson lands a right and Padilla connects with an elbow. Nelson closes in and Padilla lands a right. They trade. Nelson tries a push kick to the midsection. The round ends. 10-9 Padilla.

Round 2 – They trade kicks. Padilla continues kicking. Nelson lands a big right hand and follows it up with a leg kick. Padilla appears to be hurt. Nelson moves in and both fighters land. As they back away from each other, Nelson cracks Padilla with a high kick. Nelson throws a massive overhand right and Padilla just eats it – and AGAIN. Nelson has swung the momentum greatly in his favor over the past minute. Nelson lands two more punches and a leg kick. They trade knees. Nelson connects with another low calf kick. Nelson throws an absolute haymaker that misses Padilla. A Nelson low kick spins Padilla around in a pirouette. A left hook from Nelson clips Padilla. Nelson pops Padilla with a jab. Nelson connects on another big right. Padilla returns with a right. Nelson is doing an excellent job defensively of avoiding Padilla’s attacks. Padilla is hitting a lot of air and arm. Nelson tries a high kick and Padilla catches it. Padilla walks Nelson back to the fence. Nelson breaks and tries another high kick. It appears to miss. The round ends. 19-19.

Round 3 – Padilla cycles around Nelson, who lands double right hands. Padilla kicks Nelson in the groin. A timeout is called. The action resumes. Padilla tries an overhand right and Nelson kicks him in the body. Padilla may have just put on a poker face but his body language wasn’t great. Nelson’s nose bridge is split and blood is leaking down his face. Padilla is really walking Nelson down now, aggressively – but he’s not throwing anything. Nelson doubles up on his lefts. Nelson goes back to the calf kick, which has turned into a very effective tool for him. Padilla is plodding after Nelson, who remains on his bike. Nelson shoots for a takedown and nearly gets it. However, Padilla defends and eats a big knee to the body. They get up and exchange. The round ends. That’s a close fight. It’s going to likely come down to how the judges see the final round. MMA Junkie scores it 29-28 Padilla.

Round 1 – A touch of gloves and both men bounce around with a lot of energy. Giagos lands a right. Zellhuber is so much longer. Lots of misses from each guy. Giagos charges in and resets. Giagos exploded again and rocks Zellhuber, who wobbles backward. Giagos lands a few more punches during his charge but Zellhuber doesn’t go down. Zellhuber appears to have recovered. He just smiled. Giagos shoots for a takedown but Zellhuber denies. Giagos tags Zellhuber again with a one-two. Zellhuber charges in and tries a flying knee. Giagos ducks and grabs for a takedown. Zellhuber throws him aside. Giagos leg kicks. The horn sounds. 10-9 Giagos.

Round 2 – Zellhuber lands leg kicks. Giagos slings leather but misses. Zellhuber connects with a left hand. Another punch from Zellhuber lands. Those two strikes were probably the best offense of the fight for him. Giagos might agree, as he just shot for a takedown. Zellhuber shows off great balance, as he pogos around on one leg. Giagos drives him into the fence. Zellhuber turns him around and escapes. Zellhuber lands a right and Giagos appears to be hurt. Giagos shoots for a takedown and Zellhuber snatches an anaconda choke. Zellhuber rolls and this is deep. Giagos taps. There’s one for Mexico. Nice performance by Zellhuber.

Round 1 – Rosas comes out absolutely winging punches here. Mitchell returns with an even wilder barrage. Mitchell lands a good punch. Rosas resets and drills Mitchell with a bomb of a left hand. Mitchell goes over backward. Rosas pounces. Mitchell is shifting and rolling trying to avoid the onslaught. Rosas mounts him though and pounds away. Mitchell is covering up. In dives referee Mark Smith. That’s it. What an explosive performance by Rosas, as the crowd celebrates.

Jack Della Maddalena vs. Kevin Holland

Round 1 – No touch of gloves. This is a non-Mexico-centric bout, but the crowd is already very into it. Della Maddalena moves forward and lands a leg kick – and another. Holland tries to clinch and Della Maddalena feeds him a series of punches. Holland lands two leg kicks. Holland lands a pushing side kick to the midsection. “Let’s go, Holland” is the chant. Holland has a ton of fakes going. He seems very calm. They clinch. Both fighters landed strikes on the break. Holland spins and Della Maddalena bumps into his back. Della Maddalena follows Holland to the fence and lands a hard body shot. Again, Holland finds himself in uncommitted to a strike with his back turned. Della Maddalena pursues him again. Back in the center, they trade elbows in the clinch. Holland lands some slow kicks to the leg. Della Maddalena runs in and Holland tags him with a right hand. Holland lands a combination. Della Maddalena misses a punch and Holland is yapping. Della Maddalena kicks Holland in the butt as Holland was spinning. Holland rubs his bottom, which gets a laugh out of the crowd. Della Maddalena lands a combination, and another. Holland whispers in Della Maddalena’s ear after the horn sounds. 10-9 Della Maddalena.

Round 2 – They trade body kicks. Della Maddalena lands a leg kick and Holland turns his back again. Della Maddalena pursues him, then lands a punch. Holland lands a hard right hand. Della Maddalena lands a hard leg kick. Holland charges with a combination. Della Maddalena moves forward and Holland counters him. Every time Della Maddalena gets too aggressive, Holland tries a hard right hand. Della Maddalena has to be careful. Holland tries a high kick. Della Maddalena lands a right hand. Holland misses on a left hand badly. He laughs. Della Maddalena lands a punch, then a leg kick. Maddalena lands a four-punch combination that alternated body-head. Holland is woken up a bit. He runs forward and the two exchange words. Holland shoots and Della Maddalena denies. Holland lands an elbow. Holland catches a kick right before the round ends. 20-18 Della Maddalena.

Round 3 – They trade kicks. Holland lands a spinning back elbow. It was sneaky, as Della Maddalena chased down the back-facing Holland. Della Maddalena runs in with a combination and Holland clinches him. Holland lands an elbow on the break. Holland teeps to the midsection, then lands a combination. They’re getting wild now, off-balance, trading air-punches. The crowd boos. Della Maddalena lands a combination and a couple sneaky elbows on the break. The crowd boos as the horn sounds. Round 1 and 2 were very close. MMA Junkie scores it 30-27 Della Maddalena.

Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko

Round 1 – The crowd is singing. Grasso lands fist. Shevchenko follows. The crowd is singing. Dual point-fighting pursues. Eventually, Shevchenko shoots for a takedown. Grasso denies her. Shevchenko is using a lot of kicks without much wasted movement. Shevchenko ducks under a Grasso combination and grabs the bodylock. Shevchenko spins and plants Grasso to the canvas. Shevchenko takes Grasso’s back, but Grasso escapes! Shevchenko knees Grasso in the stomach and clinches against the fence. “Si se puede” is the chant from the crowd. The round ends with Shevchenko in control along the fence. 10-9 Shevchenko

Round 2 – Shevchenko clinches Grasso, who shoves her away when they hit the fence. Shevchenko leg kicks, then comes over the top with a one-two. A left hand for Shevchenko lands. Grasso resets and drills Shevchenko with a big one-two that sends Shevchenko summersaulting over backward. Grasso charges and Shevchenko grabs hold of the body. Grasso stuffs any sort of takedown and lands a dozen or so short punches in the clinch. She’s really hurt. They separate. Shevchenko shoots again and gets the takedown. Shevchenko is in the guard of Grasso, who has her right arm isolated. There isn’t much going on here. Shevchenko knees Grasso in the butt. Grasso shoves Shevchenko off with her feet. Shevchenko nearly gets caught with a big upkick. Shevchenko stands above the downed Grasso and tries an axe kick. Eventually Shevchenko dives into Grasso’s guard. Grasso starts landing rabbit punches on Shevchenko from the bottom, much to the delight of the crowd. The round ends with Shevchenko on top. 19-19.

Round 3 – Shevchenko uses her technical boxing early in the frame. Both women land jabs. Grasso moves forward and Shevchenko takes her down again. Shevchenko is in half guard. Grasso again wiggles out but Shevchenko snatches her neck. Shevchenko pulls for a guillotine choke and ends up right in mount. This choke looks tight. The torque on Grasso’s neck is nasty. It appears Shevchenko lost her grip. Shevchenko lets go. Grasso tries to scramble up but Shevchenko takes her back. Shevchenko has the body lock. Again, Grasso tries to explode out but Shevchenko stays glued to her back. Grasso again tries to twist her way out of the body triangle. Shevchenko tries for an armbar but the horn sounds. 29-28 Shevchenko.

Round 4 – Grasso lands a leg kick. Shevchenko jabs. Shevchenko shoots for a takedown and Grasso puts her in a head lock. As Shevchenko posts up, she puts one hand down and Grasso knees her several times. Shevchenko complains about illegal knees, but referee Herb Dean tells her to fight on. One hand was down (not two), so those were legal. Along the fence, they separate. Back in the center, Shevchenko rips a hard combination. The right hand that finished the combination appeared to slice Grasso open. Shevchenko grabs the clinch and takes Grasso down. Grasso pops up along the fence and tries for a heel hook. The round expires. 39-37 Shevchenko, though it could be a tie ball game entering Round 5.

Round 5 – They trade. Shevchenko lands a combination. Grasso lands a leg kick. Shevchenko jabs, then lands a one-two. Grasso shoots and Shevchenko sneaks her leg out with seeming ease. Shevchenko’s jab is really working now. Grasso’s left eye has blood all around it. Shevchenko lands two more punches. They both land, as they open up more. Grasso runs in. Shevchenko grabs hold and tries a throw. However, Shevchenko loses her grip and face-plants. What a mistake! Grasso grabs Shevchenko’s back and seeks a rear-naked choke. It’s tough to see what’s going on down there. But Shevchenko avoids the choke. Grasso maintains the back and tries a face crank. MMA Junkie scores it 48-47 Shevchenko.
