No, The Simpsons Did Not Kill Off Marge In The S36 Finale – Here’s What Actually Happened

The Simpsons fans are in a state of disbelief following a recent episode of the sitcom which sees an iconic character with equally iconic hair shockingly pass away. Ay, caramba!

ICYMI, the animated series is currently airing its 36th season, and the finale episode — titled “Estranger Things” — features a scene in which Marge Simpson appears from heaven.

Of course, anyone who has put up with Homer Simpson for that long was always going to make it to the pearly gates, but the family matriarch’s heavenly purpose is focussed not on her Duff-drinking husband, but her eldest children.

“Estranger Things” jumps 35 years into the future to find siblings Lisa and Bart estranged for years, with Marge leaving them a will and letter encouraging them to reconcile.

For some reason, she does so with the musical assist of The Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr, whom she shares a heavenly kiss with.

The brother-sister duo, now in their 40s (feel old yet?), read the letter as Marge watches from heaven — meaning that, within the timeline of the show, Marge dies at some point in her 70s.

It’s not revealed how Marge dies (chronic back pain from carrying an impossibly tall hairdo, perhaps?), but the sight of the matriarch in heaven was enough to send long-running The Simpsons fans into a tailspin

“No way they’re tryna kill off Marge in The Simpsons wtf”, one fan wrote on X, with another expressing disbelief that the show’s writers “really killed MARGE?!”.

For all those who’ve preemptively planned the funeral (you’d need an extra long coffin), it’s worth reiterating that Marge died in a flash-forward, so she is still alive in the show’s current timeline and will almost certainly appear in future episodes.

In any case, it’s far from the first time viewers have been floored by an episode of The Simpsons, which at this point doubles as an animated crystal ball or tea-reader.

But even beyond its spooky predictions, fans have over the course of its historic run been shocked by at least two other character deaths, suspring members of its voice cast, and a sleeper-hit episode in season 34

Anyway, I’m off to host a vigil for our dearly (somewhat) departed Marge. Hairspray is mandatory.
