No sign of Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho as Liverpool train at Kirkby for first time

Some of the Liverpool squad were put through their paces today in Kirkby as the club's brand new AXA Training Centre opened officially.

With many of Jurgen Klopp's squad away on international duty, it was far from a full complement although the likes of Joel Matip, James Milner, Divock Origi, Adrian and Nat Phillips were all pictured.

There was no sign however of Thiago Alacantara or Fabinho, both of whom are thought to be nearing fitness after injury lay-offs.

Manager Jurgen Klopp indicated before the international break that he was hopeful the pair would soon be back in action.

They were not pictured in Tuesday's training session but given the size of the club's impressive new facility it is possible they may have training out of sight of the cameras.

It was nonetheless a historic day for the club with the new AXA Training Centre opening 722 days after construction first began.

The club had initially hoped to move into the £50million base back in July before construction was halted for a couple months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, Liverpool said their final goodbye to their historic Melwood base, closing the gate on what had been their home for over 70 years before the move to Kirkby.

Some of Klopp's players have already been introduced to the facilities at the AXA Centre with the likes of Fabinho and James Milner posting of their visits last week ahead of the grand opening.

“Today is a really special day for the team," Klopp said. "It has been a long time coming.

"There has been a lot of steps, meetings with architects, designers, everybody!

“The facility is great and whoever has the chance to visit will be impressed. It is a wonderful building - you have everything you need now and for the future. It’s pretty much perfect!”

The new 9,200sqm training base creates a combined first-team and Under-23 facility, housing all of the club's age groups in the same area for the first time.
