No Rs 1 lakh bonus for resident doctors for pandemic work

MUMBAI: While one-third of resident doctors who worked extensively during the first two waves of the pandemic are being denied a token amount of Rs 1.2 lakh as an acknowledgement for services, doctors who are yet to start residency are likely to benefit from it.

BMC has proposed Rs 26 crore to incentivise 2,155 Covid warriors, including first, second and third year junior resident doctors, following a government resolution in October.

A clause, however, mentions that the amount will be granted only to resident doctors currently in service. This clause will throw the batch of 2018, whose residency period ended on July 1, 2021, out of the circular’s ambit. The 2021 batch, which was to start residency last May, but will join later this month, may be included. Doctors, who said the move was unfair, have sought minister Aaditya Thackeray’s intervention.
