The government's Digital India programme continues to expand access to public services through digital platforms such as UMANG and DigiLocker. Launched in July 2015 with the aim of making technology more accessible and empowering citizens, the programme has enabled people to access a growing range of government services and digital documents without relying on physical paperwork or repeated visits to government offices.
UMANG offers over 2,500 government services
As per government data, as of July 31, around 2,575 services were available on the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) platform across India. This included 880 Central Government services and 1,695 State Government services.
UMANG has more than 11.66 crore registered users and recorded around 798 crore transactions over the last three years, highlighting the growing use of digital platforms for accessing government services.
DigiLocker crosses 72 crore registered users
DigiLocker has also emerged as a major platform for accessing and storing digital documents. As of July 31, more than 72.43 crore users were registered on the platform.
Around 5,437 document types and services are available through DigiLocker, including 661 from the Central Government and 4,776 from State Governments. The platform recorded approximately 72.86 crore document access transactions over the last three years.
Common service centres expand digital access in rural India
The government has also expanded the network of Common Service Centres (CSCs) to improve access to digital services in rural, remote and underserved areas. These centres provide a range of citizen-centric services, including government services, banking, financial services, insurance, pension-related services and utility payments.
As of June 30, 4,07,122 CSCs were functional at the Gram Panchayat level. Of these, 70,069 were operated by women Village Level Entrepreneurs, helping expand digital service delivery while also creating opportunities for women in rural areas.
UMANG and DigiLocker enable paperless government services
Both UMANG and DigiLocker are available through mobile applications as well as web portals, allowing citizens to access services and documents from different locations.
The platforms are integrated with key components of India's Digital Public Infrastructure, including Aadhaar, eSign and API Setu. This integration supports more seamless and paperless delivery of government services.
Digital authentication reduces need for physical visits
UMANG and DigiLocker provide features such as secure authentication, digital document verification and consent-based document sharing. These services can reduce dependence on physical documents and help citizens complete certain government-related processes without visiting offices in person.
The use of digital documents and online verification also supports faster service delivery while reducing paperwork.
Government promotes digital literacy across rural areas
Alongside digital platforms, the government is promoting digital literacy through initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA). Awareness campaigns are also being conducted to encourage citizens to use online government services.
The government has further focused on making digital services more inclusive by offering UMANG and DigiLocker services in multiple Indian languages and working to improve accessibility and user experience.
More government services to be added
Government departments and State Governments are regularly being onboarded onto UMANG and DigiLocker to bring more citizen-centric services and digital documents onto the platforms.
The figures were shared by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha on August 7, 2026, highlighting the scale at which India's digital public services have expanded under the Digital India programme.
