As creators of Cambridge Pre-U, we would like to address a couple of points made in Bernie Evans’ letter (University grade inflation under the spotlight, 28 October). A high proportion of A-A* equivalent grades at Cambridge Pre-U is not indicative of grade inflation. Cambridge Pre-U is a relatively small qualification in the UK and is not taken by a typical cohort.
Schools tell us that they will advise students to study Cambridge Pre-U where a student’s personal interest in the subject motivates them to embark on the programme (often where the subject may be chosen for their undergraduate degree), as it requires in-depth, independent study. The results bear out that, over recent years, Cambridge Pre-U students represent an above-average cohort.
