No coronavirus deaths registered overnight in Scotland but 422 positive cases

A further 422 Scots have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland over the last 24 hours, but no deaths.

The Scottish Government released the latest figures on Sunday afternoon bringing the total number of confirmed Covid cases to 217,127 since the start of the pandemic.

Currently, 264 Scots are being treated in hospital for the disease with 22 requiring additional medical support in intensive care.

A total of 7,584 people in Scotland have now lost their lives to Covid-19 according to official records.

The figures update comes as a leading Scots scientist has warned he feels ‘nervous’ about plans to lift lockdown restrictions in June.

Professor Mark Woolhouse, an infectious disease epidemiology expert at Edinburgh University, believes that the public will need to remain ‘alert’ to the virus for years to come.

He said that some form of social distancing, the use of PPE and the need to self-isolate if exposed to the bug will need to remain in place for some time yet.

He added: “The idea that we can suddenly emerge from this in one great bound, I think, is a little over-optimistic."
