The alliance of Nissan Motor Co., Group Renault of France and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will join forces with Google LLC to equip the information displays in their cars with the Android operating system, officials of the companies said Tuesday.
The alliance is planning to start sales of Android-equipped vehicles in 2021.
The cars will use the infotainment system installed in the Android platform instead of car navigation and audio systems. According to the alliance, the vehicles will be able to be used like a smartphone because they will be constantly connected to the internet. For example, they will feature route guidance by Google Maps and allow users to answer texts or operate media using voice controls. Planned functions include the ability to share information such as total mileage and data on vehicle problems with automobile dealers.
