Nintendo has confirmed that its next gaming platform, the NX, will be released globally in March 2017.

Unusually, the company made the announcement in its quarterly financial statement, telling shareholders: “For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed ‘NX’ with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally.”

The company added that the NX, first announced in March 2015, will not be demonstrated at the upcoming E3 video games conference, in June. Instead, its keynote there will focus on the next game in the Legend of Zelda series, which will launch simultaneously on the Wii U and NX in 2017.

Though the NX will be hitting shelves in less than a year, details are still scarce about what the platform actually is. Although it is assumed to be a follow-up to the company’s underperforming Wii U, a report from the Wall Street Journal in October suggested that the device would be a hybrid between a home console and a mobile games console, to sit alongside the New Nintendo 3DS.

The paper reported that the NX “would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use”.
