Nintendo has revealed it has 'decided to change' the release date for its Legend of Zelda live-action movie — but now it's coming out earlier than any of us expected

Eyes up, Nintendo fans — The Legend of Zelda Movie's release date has been tweaked, but don't worry, it hasn't been delayed.

Indeed, the highly-anticipated live-action film, which was set to land in theaters on May 7, 2027, has actually been moved up by a week. It's now set to debut worldwide on April 30, 2027.

The announcement comes courtesy of Nintendo legend and president Shigeru Miyamoto. Indeed, in a statement posted on the videogame giant's social media channels yesterday (May 13), Miyamoto-san revealed The Legend of Zelda's movie adaptation would be with us earlier than expected.

"This is Miyamoto," the post begins. "We have decided to change the worldwide theatrical release date of the live-action film The Legend of Zelda from May 7, 2027 to April 30, 2027. In order to deliver it to everyone even one day sooner, the team is united in advancing production. It's less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer."

It's unclear why one of next year's most exciting new movies is coming out earlier than anticipated. However, with filming reportedly wrapping on the project last month, it appears its production is going smoother than even Miyamoto-san might have predicted.

What do we know about The Legend of Zelda Movie so far?

Truth be told, not a great deal. Indeed, aside from its new launch date, the ever-secretive Nintendo has kept its cards close to its chest regarding the movie's cast, plot, and which of the franchise's many beloved games it's drawing inspiration from.

On the cast front, only two actors are officially involved in The Legend of Zelda Movie: Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who'll play Link, aka the Hero of Time, and Bo Bragason, who'll portray the titular princess of Hyrule. Severance actor Dichen Lachman was believed to have been spotted on set as Zelda's protector-in-chief Impa, but Lachman's involvement is still a rumor at this stage.

Meanwhile, fans believe they know which game's story is being adapted for this flick after Nintendo released the first official images for The Legend of Zelda Movie in November 2025. Again, though, this is purely speculation, and it won't be until Nintendo releases the film's first trailer that we'll be able to decipher which game(s) it'll be inspired by.
