Nintendo fans are sharing their reactions to a big twist in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and opinions are pretty divided.
Now, be warned that the following will contain spoilers for the movie, so turn back now if you're not up to date!
In the film, it's revealed that Peach and Rosalina are actually sisters, which is a mix-up of the usual lore, where a familial connection has never been confirmed. While some fans are opposed to the change, others are embracing it.
"It's a blatant retcon. Rosalina and Peach barely interact in the film. You could remove them being sisters, and it doesn't change anything," argues one fan.
"It's not a retcon, we have theories about them being related for years and Rosalina's mother looks exactly like Peach, so it makes sense for her to be her sister," says someone else.
"I'm glad Nintendo is finally addressing this because it never made sense for them not to be related. She has Peach's face," says another person. "Only problem is, them being immediate relatives doesn't make sense for the games. The only way it works is if Peach is a descendant of Rosalina's brother."
"Nah the whole thing's kinda stupid ngl. Like it's much better that these two weren't really related whatsoever ngl, it's like if they made Mario and Wario direct relatives or smth," is another person's take.
"Nah, that 'reveal' in the movie was the biggest eye roll ever. It just leaves you with so many more questions about Peach specifically," says another fan.
"I don't get the hate with this decision. It was a shock. And in a way makes sense. I mean, the only thing I don't like is the reason they separated about the dark forces and who was trying to get them. But maybe next movie we find out," is another person's opinion.
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie got off to a very strong start at the box office, it hasn't fared so well with critics. Our own 3-star Super Mario Galaxy Movie review reads: "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie surpasses the original thanks to relentless energy and creativity, but its starry-eyed ambitions fizzle out thanks to the bizarre treatment of Brie Larson's Rosalina and an undercooked story."
