Nintendo Direct June 2023: The biggest game announcements

Nintendo has shown off the cluster of games that will see the Nintendo Switch sail off into the twilight, during June 21’s Nintendo Direct.

More than 20 games were announced for what is expected to be the Switch’s last year or so as Nintendo’s primo console.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder was the biggest announcement of the lot. It’s a classic 2D Mario platformer, and was revealed with a trailer that makes it look like one of the Nineties Mario games given a 2023 coat of paint.

It’s due out on October 20.

Another of the Mario announcements has an even stronger link to the past. Super Mario RPG is getting a remake.

This title was originally released in 1996 for the SNES, but the new version with 3D visuals and a fresh look is coming on November 17.

In a move you would never have seen back in the Nineties, Nintendo actually opened its Nintendo Direct show talking about Sega’s Sonic.

Sonic Superstars is a classic two-dimensional platformer, again evoking the first games from the series released decades ago. It’s coming “in the fall” but this is not the first time we’ve seen the game, as it has previously been announced for PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Looking for something that doesn’t rely on nostalgia? Viral hit Vampire Survivors is finally coming to Nintendo Switch on August 17. It also introduces four-player local co-op multiplayer, which should be a blast.

Other notable announcements include Detective Pikachu Returns, a mystery adventure out on October 6, a series of new tracks for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and a remake of Luigi’s Mansion 2, originally released for Nintendo 3DS in 2013.

A dedicated Princess Peach game is coming, too, although there are very limited details on this one thus far, other than that it is coming in 2024.
