Nigella Lawson leaves fans appalled with pasta recipe labelled an 'abomination'

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson has divided opinion with a controversial pasta recipe after claiming she's yet to find a child who doesn't like it.

It's hard to cause much offence with a simple pasta dish, but Nigella predicted the backlash which followed from some as she pleaded with Italians "not to shout at me".

The recipe only uses four ingredients, but includes the addition of one you'll either love or hate: Marmite.

Sharing it on Instagram, Nigella wrote: "So many of you know and love this already, and the rest of you are probably horrified by it.

The recipe sparked a fierce debate (nigellalawson/Instagram)

"Recipe of the day is spaghetti with Marmite. (Australians may obviously use vegemite.)

"And Italians, don’t shout at me: this comes via the great Anna del Conte!"

The post attracted more than 1,260 comments, as some raved about the dish. One wrote: "This recipe changed my life. I've never tasted anything so fabulous! Also a great hangover cure."

Another said: "Yes!! I have been eating this deliciousness my entire life, I love that you've posted this! It's tangy, it's carby, it's lush."

But others were having absolutely nothing to do with it, as one simply said: "There must be something wrong with you."

A second commented: "What the...? An abomination."

A third wrote: "I am absolutely appalled, Nigella! Vegemite on buttered toast is divine but with pasta?"

For those who didn't reply with a string of green vomit emojis, Nigella shared a link to her website showing the recipe in full.

To serve 4-6 people, all you need is 375g of spaghetti, 50g of unsalted butter, one teaspoon of Marmite (or more if you fancy) and grated parmesan.

Boil the spaghetti in plenty of salted water and when it's almost done, melt the butter in a saucepan, adding the Marmite and one tablespoon of the pasta water.

Drain the pasta, keeping half a cup of the water, and pour the Marmite mixture over the drained spaghetti, adding some of the pasta water if needed.

Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top to finish. Good luck.
