Nigella Lawson applauds Janey Godley's new book and said she absolutely loved it

TV chef Nigella Lawson has praised Scots comedian Janey Godley for her latest book Nothing Left Unsaid.

Janey recently brought out her first novel this month, about a woman's struggle with cancer - which was written before her own cancer diagnosis late last year.

And the famous TV chef has taken to Twitter to say that it was so good, she finished it in two sittings.

Sharing a picture on the social media platform, Nigella said: "Flying across Australia right now and read #NothingLeftUnsaid in two greedy stints. It’s a novel written with wit, righteous rage and compassion. Thank you @JaneyGodley."

Nothing Left Unsaid is set in Glasgow between 1976 and 2019 with a woman, Senga, asking her family to see her in hospital as she reaches the end of a battle with cancer.

She sends her eldest daughter Sharon to read her diary, determined to share a secret that she’s been holding on to for 40 years, and revealing the story of 5 women determined to survive against the odds.

The journey into her mother’s past is both shocking and surprising, forcing Sharon to re-evaluate her own childhood, her marriage and what she wants the future to hold.

Some, though happily not all of the art, spookily mirrors life in the book.

Janey, whose Nicola Sturgeon viral voice-over videos captivated the nation and beyond said the book was her “favourite project” during the lockdown period.

The book is extremely funny but also very moving, and has an urgent mystery woven through its pages.

Janey who lives in Glasgow with her husband and daughter Ashley Storrie who is also a successful comedian said of her new novel: "This book saved my life during lockdown and gave me focus to write a love letter to all those women I grew up with in Glasgow.

"Writing in lockdown was hard and my brain kept freezing, but I really hope that I can transport people back to Glasgow in the 70’s which wasn’t all bad. This is my first novel and I hope you all enjoy it."

At the end of last year, the 61-year-old was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

And in January, Janey underwent a hysterectomy but even after the surgery she was told she would need to undergo further treatment as her cancer had progressed to stage 3b.

This means there are cancer growths 2cm or smaller in size on the lining of the abdomen and there may also be cancer in the lymph nodes.

Janey is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
