Nigel Pearson urges Watford to focus on themselves during Premier League relegation run-in

Watford boss Nigel Pearson has told his squad to focus on their own situation as the race to secure Premier League survival hots up.

The Hornets beat Norwich City on Tuesday night to move four points clear of the relegation zone with only four games to go.

The battle at the bottom is proving to be incredibly tight, with two from Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Watford and West Ham likely to go down.

After their win on Tuesday, Watford have created some breathing space from their rivals, but Pearson has warned his side they cannot let up yet.

“I think it is about trying to sense what is required,” he said. “Just because people are involved in similar situations is no guarantee that what you have done in the past is going to have any relevance.

“I think being in the type of position we are in, as I have already said, it is about us really trying to focus very much on ourselves.

“It is never easy to empty your mind from what is happening elsewhere just because it is such a high-profile sport and the Premier League is such a big brand, but you can either choose to watch it or not.

“I think the important thing is to reflect as honestly as possible on your own performances. The way I measure our performances is against ourselves and the real focus is on how we get our own players to play as well as we can.

“We just prepare for this game [against Newcastle on Saturday], try and win it, and then we will prepare for the next game and try and win that.

“The emphasis for us is just concentrating on our own performances and hopefully that will be sufficient.”
