Nigel Farage is furious with his security after a milkshake was thrown at him in Newcastle

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has been hit by a milkshake while promoting his Brexit Party.

He was moved away by his security team after the milkshake hit him on the chest in Newcastle city centre.

Another person was dragged away by a Police Community Support Officer.

Reporters at the scene said the party leader was angry with his security team and was demanding to know how it had happened.

Shortly after the incident, Mr Farage could be heard saying "how did you not stop that?" as his staff ushered him away from the scene.

Paul Crowther, 32, from Throckley, Newcastle, said it was a £5.25 Five Guys banana and salted caramel milkshake.

He told the Press Association: "I didn't know he was in town, I thought this is my only chance."

Mr Crowther said he saw there was a Brexit Party event in the city centre, thought it was an MEP and then saw Mr Farage.

He said: "It's a right of protest against people like him.

"The bile and the racism he spouts out in this country is far more damaging than a bit of milkshake to his front."

This was Farage's reaction to what happened:

Anti-far-right activists have been throwing milk drinks at candidates as a form of protest.

During his visit to Edinburgh at the weekend, a Burger King nearby stopped the sale of milkshakes and ice cream products over fears they would be thrown at Mr Farage.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for an investigation to be carried out into the finances of Mr Farage and the Brexit Party.

Mr Brown, speaking in Glasgow on Monday, said that democracy would continue to be undermined if payments to the party were not declared.

He also challenged the Electoral Commission and the European Parliament to indicate whether they are investigating the party, or say whether questions over dubious payments had been answered, ahead of the European elections on Thursday.
