Nigel Farage would accept American citizenship if he could work with Donald Trump

Nigel Farage has admitted he would accept American citizenship if it meant he could have a job in Donald Trump’s government should he become the next President of the United States.

The former leader of Ukip and staunch Brexiteer was asked by the BBC’s Andrew Neil if he had considered American citizenship and "getting them to appoint you as ambassador to Brussels" while completing a round of media interviews as the US election results trickled in.

“Well, it has been speculated on, it has been joked about,” he said with a huge grin spreading over his face. “Gosh, if I got a green card and went to Brussels wouldn’t that be fun? I don’t really think it’s going to happen.”

When pressed by Mr Neil if he would like it, he replied: “Alright, yes” before breaking into laughter.

Of course, people who become American citizens must revoke the citizenship of their birth country, meaning the man who campaigned for some many years to keep get the UK out of the EU and passionately defended its 'independence' would not even be a citizen of the UK.

Mr Farage famously appeared side-by-side with Mr Trump at one of his rallies in Jackson, Mississippi to tell the “Brexit story” in August. He has also spoken about the controversial candidate favourably several times.

However, despite this and his previous criticism of Hillary Clinton, Mr Farage previously backtracked on his support for Mr Trump after he was heard making lewd and sexist comments about women in an unearthed 2005 recording.
