Nicola Sturgeon warns Covid cases ‘too high’ for an ‘England freedom day’

Nicola Sturgeon has hit out at England’s ‘Freedom Day’ saying it’s not ‘sensible’ considering how high the Covid cases are.

Tomorrow both Scotland and England will move out of Covid restrictions, with south of the border set to end almost all lockdown rules.

However, Scotland will move to level 0 of restrictions, which will see rules still placed on group numbers, hospitality opening hours, and facemasks still mandatory.

In a social media post, the First Minister shared a graph of soaring Covid cases in England and warned that we must ease restrictions gradually.

She said: “As this chart shows, cases in Scotland are falling, but still too high. To talk of tomorrow as ‘freedom day’ (England only remember) is not sensible IMO, given current situation. Vaccines going well and do offer route through - but as we vaccinate, we must ease up gradually…”

The First Minister then urged Scots to be cautious as they move out of restrictions adding: “If you live in or visiting Scotland please abide by remaining safety measures. Stick to group limits, keep 1m distance in public places, wear face masks, wash hands etc.

"While we vaccinate, these measures help keep us safe.”

The latest statistics show that every one in 90 people in Scotland is estimated to have had Covid-19 in the week to July 10.
