Nicola Sturgeon to give covid update today - here's when and how to watch

Nicola Sturgeon is to make a statement in the Scottish Parliament today after Covid case numbers increased by more than 3,000 for the past five days in a row.

The First Minister will update MSPs on the government's latest position amid speculation that some rules could be tightened in Scotland ahead of Christmas.

It comes after the Scottish Government confirmed 3,077 more people tested positive in 24 hours yesterday, with one further death in the same 24 hour period.

There were 765 people in hospitals across Scotland, 56 of them in intensive care.

The coronavirus death toll of people who first tested positive in the previous 28 days currently stands at 9,389 in Scotland.

The parliamentary session begins at around 2pm and Ms Sturgeon will speak shortly after.

What is she likely to discuss?

Nicola Sturgeon is to reveal if further restrictions - including an extension of Scotland's vaccine passport scheme - are to be brought in to help combat rising numbers of infections.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney revealed last week that Scottish Government is considering extending the vaccine certification scheme – already in place in nightclubs and at other large events – to more parts of the hospitality and leisure sector.

Mr Swinney stressed a decision has not yet been made but said Covid-19 was at a "concerningly high level" and Scotland is in a "precarious and unpredictable" position.

He added that ministers were also considering steps to increase home working and "whether changes are needed to extend use of face coverings".

Where can I watch it?

The briefing will be broadcast live from around 2pm on the Scottish Government Twitter page or on BBC Scotland.
