Nicola Sturgeon should be suspended, claims man whose complaint sparked SNP finance probe

The man whose complaint to Police Scotland sparked the SNP’s party finance crisis has called for Nicola Sturgeon to be suspended while investigations continue.

Sean Clerkin claims he was branded a “traitor” by some SNP members after his complaint about allegedly missing funds led to the Operation Branchform inquiry.

Yesterday, the veteran campaigner said Sturgeon should be suspended from the party after her arrest on Sunday.

Clerkin, 62, said: “It seems quite clear to me that Nicola Sturgeon should be suspended from the party immediately.

“The same should apply, with no presumption of guilt, to Peter Murrell. They should both be given distance from all party affairs while the investigation runs its course.

“When I made my complaint in 2021 it was all about transparency and the inquiry launched by Police Scotland is seeking to establish exactly what went on with party funds.”

He added: “From my perspective, there are people trying to rubbish the inquiry but police seem to be rigorously going about the investigation in a serious way and I am happy that this is the case.”

Clerkin has been a campaigner on housing issues but courted controversy with stunts in the name of the Scottish Resistance independence campaigners.

Clerkin feared £666,953 in donations raised since 2017 for IndyRef2 had been spent on other things, contrary to promises made to supporters.
