Nicola Sturgeon says staycations may be possible in summer but foreign holidays 'unlikely'

Nicola Sturgeon warned holidays abroad this summer are off the cards but suggested staycations could be possible.

The First Minister advised people against booking breaks this Easter as it was unlikely the tourist industry will have fully reopened by then.

The SNP leader told MSPs at Holyrood progress against the spread of coronavirus remained "fragile" and said lockdown restrictions would remain in place until at least early March, and likely beyond that.

Schools will begin a phased reopening from next Monday but non-essential businesses and the hospitality sector remains closed.

The Scottish Government expects to publish a revised framework on the country's route out of lockdown next week, which is likely to offer more detail on when Scots will be free to meet up with different households.

On the issue of holidays, the First Minister said: "We are likely to advise against booking Easter holidays, either overseas or within Scotland, as it is highly unlikely that we will have been able to fully open hotels or self catering accommodation by then.

"However, for the summer, while it is still highly unlikely that overseas holidays will be possible or advisable, staycations might be - but this will depend on the data nearer the time.

"Given the risks posed by new variants of this virus, it is hard to overstate the necessity of being careful, cautious and gradual as we exit this lockdown, if we want to avoid another one later in the year.

"And that means, for now, all of us continuing to abide by the stay at home requirement."
