Nicola Sturgeon's lockdown restriction announcement and what it could mean for Scotland

Scotland is to be hit with a new set of restrictions as concern grows over rising coronavirus cases.

Nicola Sturgeon will lay out her "urgent and decisive" measures today after experts warned the disease could run rampant unless immediate action is taken.

She'll make a statement to the Scottish Parliament today after Cobra meeting with all four UK nations.

The Scottish Government has been working around the clock to balance the wellbeing of the nation's health with that of the wider economy.

But what could this mean for Scots?

The First Minister made it clear yesterday that household gatherings and hospitality are under the microscope.

Social gatherings in homes in seven local authority areas across Greater Glasgow are already banned. Scotland's Health Minister Jeane Freeman has already admitted this could be extended across the entire country.

This could mean a return to outdoor meetings only if it goes ahead.

Scotland could follow England in imposing a curfew on pubs and restaurants, forcing them to close early and introducing a table service only rule.

And a so-called 'leaked' government paper highlighting a potential 'circuit-breaker' could also see a raft of even stricter measures imposed for a short period of time - potentially over the October school holiday.

The paper was published on Twitter yesterday and included returning to the "stay at home" message, with travel restrictions, closure of hospitality and entertainment venues.

Although it should be noted that Ms Sturgeon refused to be drawn on the contents of the document during her daily briefing yesterday.

When asked about the paper, she said: "I'm not going to comment on leaked documents, whether they are genuine or not.

"What I would say is that any responsible government right now would be looking at a whole range of different options."
