Nicola Sturgeon makes first Holyrood contribution since resigning as First Minister

Nicola Sturgeon has made her first parliamentary contribution as a backbench MSP following her resignation as First Minister.

The former SNP leader stunned the political world when she announced her sudden departure from frontline politics in February.

Despite exiting Bute House in March she has remained as the MSP for Glasgow Southside.

While she has taken part in several votes at Holyrood in the weeks since her resignation, she has so refrained from speaking in the chamber.

But Sturgeon has now submitted a written motion inviting her fellow MSPs to congratulate the work of a charity in her constituency.

The motion called for parliament to welcome the news the Govanhill Baths Community Trust had received £10,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund.

It added that MSPs should recognise "the vital work that Govanhill Baths carries out in supporting the community, and congratulates them on all on their hard work and dedication over the years to helping the people of Govanhill and across all of Glasgow Southside."

Sturgeon denied last month that her decision to resign as First Minister was motivated by the on-going police investigation into SNP finances.

Her husband, the former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, was last month questioned by detectives for several hours before being released without charge.

Speaking on her subsequent return to parliament, Sturgeon said: "I understand the view that some people might have, that I knew this was all about to unfold and that's why I walked away. Nothing could be further from the truth. I could not have anticipated in my worst nightmares what would have unfolded over the past few weeks."

Police Scotland launched Operation Branchform in 2021 following several complaints from the public over how the SNP had spent donations that had been ring-fenced for independence campaigning.
