Nicola Sturgeon lockdown announcement: First Minister set to make call on Tier 4 restrictions

Ayrshire will learn this afternoon whether any of its three council areas are set for Tier 4 lockdown restrictions.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is set to announce which of the regions in the west of Scotland will be moved to the higher phase as of Friday.

Up to 12 local authorities are understood to be under consideration, with all three Ayrshire councils in the mix.

Ms Sturgeon warned yesterday large areas of the western central belt could be moved to level 4 after cases have remained at a "stubbornly high level".

If confirmed as expected, the level 4 decision will lead to further restrictions on travel, closure of non essential shops, hairdressers, pubs and gyms from Friday.

What time is today's update?

Nicola Sturgeon will address the Scottish Parliament, rather than the usual format of the daily briefing.

She will face question from MSPs after the update rather than from the media.

The First Minister is due to speak at around 2.15pm.

The address will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland and on the Scottish Parliament TV  website.
