Nicola Sturgeon Covid update: Over 1,400 new cases as hospital admissions soar

Over 1,400 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in Scotland in the previous 24 hours, including 179 in NHS Lothian, Nicola Sturgeon confirmed.

It came as World Health Organisation reported increasing numbers being admitted to hospital, with 41 extra admissions taking the total number of in patients in Scotland to 1,959.

146 people are receiving treatment in intensive care units, one fewer than the figure reported the previous day.

The 1,429 new cases represented 12.3 per cent of tests which reported results, more than double the target of five per cent which the World Health Organisation has set to demonstrate the pandemic is under control in a country.

Of the new cases, the majority (451) were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the First Minister said, whilst 244 were in Lanarkshire. The other new cases were spread across the rest of Scotland's 11 health boards.

Ms Sturgeon also confirmed that 264,991 people in Scotland had now received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

No new deaths were registered, but Nicola Sturgeon reminded Scots that this figure can be artificially low on a Monday because of registration offices being closed over the weekend.

In total, 78 new deaths have been reported since Friday, taking the death toll to 5,305.

The First Minister ended her update by reminding Scots of the lockdown rules, primarily to stay at home except for essential reasons.
