Nicola Adams to make Strictly Come Dancing history by being in first same-sex couple

Olympic boxer Nicola Adams is set to make history on Strictly Come Dancing after being announced as the sixth celebrity.

Nicola is set to become to the first contestant to be paired with a same-sex dance partner on the show.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, she revealed that it was her idea to be paired with another female dancer.

She said: "It's really important, it's a big step for the show I think as well.

"It's nice to see that we're able to move on.

"I can't wait to get some dancing done really."

She added: "I asked the show about it, they wanted to know if I wanted to be on the show.

"I said 'yeah, I'll do it, but I want to dance with another female dance partner.'"

Nicola said she didn't mind who she's paired up with, but added: "I'd only be wanting somebody who's maybe a little bit on the short side because I'm a little bit small."

The former boxer won a gold medal for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, and again in Rio in 2016.

She retired from from the sport in 2019.

Two male professionals have previously danced together on Strictly in a one-off routine, when Johannes Radebe and Graziano di Prima performed to Emeli Sande's Shine last year.

Some viewers applauded the show for it's decision, but the BBC received 189 complaints from people who found it offensive.

Nicola will join Clara Amfo, Max George, Ranvir Singh, Caroline Quentin and Jason Bell on this year's line-up so far.

The 18th series of Strictly Come Dancing is set to begin in October and run for slightly shorter than normal.
