Nico Hischier scores, Cory Schneider hurt in Devils' 5-4 OT win over Senators

OTTAWA, Ontario _ Nico Hischier finally scored his first career goals.

And after a gutsy Devils' rally, they came in a game the Swiss-born No. 1 overall pick will remember fondly.

No. 1 goalie Cory Schneider might not though, as he exited after two periods because of a lower-body issue.

The Devils answered the Senators' three-goal second period with a two-goal rally in the third period and won, 5-4, in overtime on defenseman John Moore's two-on-one goal at 1:20 of the extra period.

The Devils (6-1-0) conclude their second back-to-back set of the season when they face the Sharks at Prudential Center. Backup goalie Keith Kinkaid was already scheduled to start that game. Now, the Devils may have to bring up a goalie from Binghamton (AHL).

Schneider stopped 20 of the 24 shots he faced and Kinkaid stopped all nine shots he saw.

The Devils rallied as Kyle Palmieri brought them within a goal at 4:03 of the third period and then deflected Mark Stone's pass to set up a loose puck at the crease that Marcus Johansson deposited to tie the game at 4 at 15:05 of the third period.

Craig Anderson made 41 saves for the Senators (3-1-3), who got three assists from two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, in his second game back after offseason surgery on his left foot. The Senators were 2 for 6 on the power play while the Devils, who entered the game ranked first in the NHL on the man advantage, did not convert any of their four chances.

Taylor Hall also had four assists for the Devils.

Hischier had nearly netted his first career goal _ twice _ in Tuesday night's 5-4 shootout win over the visiting Lightning but goalie Peter Budaj came up with two highlight-reel saves to leave the rookie still scoreless.

"He's certainly had numerous opportunities to score," Devils coach John Hynes said before the game. "He should probably have nine or 10 based on the games that we've played. If he continues to play the way he has, the pucks will go in for him."

So Hischier's first NHL goal came at 2:30 of the first period, as he outmuscled Jean-Gabriel Pageau for position at the crease and converted Drew Stafford's feed from behind the net to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Schneider facilitated that by stopping Mike Hoffman's two shots at the crease after he stepped up to intercept defenseman Steven Santini's cross-ice pass at the Devils' blue line.

Hischier then made it 2-1 at 4:21, again getting to the crease this time to knock in a feed from Taylor Hall. Senators coach Guy Boucher unsuccessfully challenged Hischier had interfered with Anderson before the puck crossed the line.

Hischier, at 18 years and 288 days old, is now the youngest Devil to score a goal since Craig Wolanin against the North Stars on Dec. 9, 1985, when he was 18 years, 135 days old.

Kyle Turris had tied the game with a power-play goal at 2:57, six seconds after defenseman Dalton Prout was called for roughing Zack Smith.

"When I came here, I saw the guys and I really think we have a good team and they're great guys in here and we show a lot of character," Hischier had said on Wednesday. "Character is a huge thing for a team. For me, [our play] it's not a surprise."

However, Brassard did beat Hischier up ice to the Devils' crease to redirect in Bobby Ryan's feed from the right boards to tie the game at 2 at 5:07 of the second period.

Alexandre Burrows beat Schneider, his former Canucks teammate, at the crease on his own rebound off Karlsson's feed for a power-play goal and a 3-2 lead at 7:15 of the second period. Tom Pyatt then made it 4-2 with another goal at the Devils' crease at 15:49 of the second period.
