Nick Pope wins successive Newcastle United Player of the Month awards

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has been named the club's Player of the Month for September. Pope received the award in August following his spectacular start with the Magpies and has now won back-to-back awards.

The England international has established himself as the number one goalkeeper at St James' Park since completing his move from Burnley in the summer. Pope only featured twice during September, due to the postponement of their trip to West Ham United following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and the break imposed by the latest set of international fixtures.

He kept his third clean sheet of the campaign in Newcastle's goalless draw against Crystal Palace at St James' Park on September 3. The 30-year-old has played in each of the Magpies' opening eight games in the Premier League and says he is pleased by his side's start to the season.

"I'm over the moon to win an award that's voted for by the fans," Pope told nufc.co.uk. "They've taken to me great and that's helped me perform at a good level.

"The team has looked great. I think there's been very few periods in the games that we can be unhappy with - in the main we've looked like a really good team, a good unit on and off the ball, and hopefully that will lead to more wins.

"I've got somewhere I keep [the trophies]. It's always nice to be able to have a few things to look back on; football's a short career and I'm not someone who's won loads and loads of medals and trophies. So whatever I do win, it's nice to have to look back on."
