Nia Long turned down Prince's advances - for this shocking reason

Nia Long turned down Prince

Nia Long spurned Prince's advances - because she didn't recognise him.

The Michael actress ran into the late Purple Rain hitmaker at a part before she found fame herself, and when he tried to "grab" her hand and speak to her, she turned away.

Speaking on the Angie Martinez IRL podcast, she said: "I still have my Kenneth Cole black snake embossed shoes that I wore when Prince tried to talk to me...

"I didn't know it was Prince."

Asked if the Little Red Corvette singer - who died in 2009 - was "shooting a shot" with her, she replied: "Yeah. He grabbed my hand, and I was like [go away]."

And the 55-year-old star wasn't impressed when the friend she was at the party with told her after they left the bash that she had shunned Prince, and admitted she'd have reacted differently if she was aware of her suitor's identity.

She said: "We got to the car and my hatin'-a** girlfriend at the time — because she should have told me earlier, let's be real, it was Prince — she goes, 'Girl, you know that was Prince.' I go, 'Why didn't you tell me before we left the building?'

"If I knew it was Prince, I would have just turned around and said, 'Hello.' "

Nia met Prince later in life but he wasn't interested in her romantically.

She added: "I met him years later once I became an actress. I was like, 'I met you a long time ago,' and he was lovely, but we talked about my hair the whole time because he liked my haircut."

Angie asked: "He was no longer shooting a shot?"

Nia clarified: "He was not."

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star stressed that Prince hadn't been interested in her initially because he knew who she was.

Angie asked: "So he wasn't giving you the arm touch because you were Nia Long because you weren't even Nia Long [then]?"

Nia replied: "No, he was giving me the arm touch because I was petite and brown, and that's what he likes. He's like, 'Who's this little young, hot girl in the fake leather pumps?' In the outfit that I wore to every party."

Nia won't get rid of the shoes because they will always remind her of the party.

She said: "Denzel [Washington] was just there. I mean, I didn't talk to Denzel at that point, but I was like, 'Denzel Washington's here.' These shoes have miles on them!

"I was like, 'This was the night I met Denzel Washington and Prince in the same night. I'm keeping these pumps for my daughter. I mean, I'm never going to have a daughter, but my granddaughter. I'm done with kids."
