NHS trusts to be examined in national investigation into ‘failures’

  • The government has identified 14 NHS trusts that will be investigated as part of a national review into failures in maternity and neonatal care.
  • Health and social care secretary Wes Streeting initiated the rapid investigation in June, following over 15 years of growing allegations of poor care.
  • Baroness Valerie Amos will lead the scrutiny, selecting trusts based on factors including Care Quality Commission surveys, perinatal mortality rates, and family feedback.
  • The review aims to produce national recommendations for maternity and neonatal services, with interim findings due by December 2025.
  • Baroness Amos stated that the experiences of mothers and families, particularly those from marginalised groups, will be central to shaping the recommendations.
