NHS staff working at one of Newcastle's biggest hospitals have been offered free parking by HM Revenue and Customs.
Around 750 spaces have been made available at the organisation's Benton Park View site, which is just a short walk from the Freeman Hospital, in High Heaton.
HMRC employees in customer-facing roles, such as those who answer calls, continue to work from their office but all face-to-face activities with customers have been suspended.
Christopher Tait, regional change lead for Newcastle, HMRC, said: “We are helping NHS employees get into work as easily as possible, to allow them to continue providing essential treatment and care.
"We hope the offer for hundreds of car parking spaces will also help ease pressure on reduced public transport services and support staff working shifts.
“As public servants, our own focus during this extremely difficult time is to maintain our vital services to customers, who need our help more than ever to deal with the impact of Covid-19 on their own families and businesses.
“I would like to thank all of our workers who are delivering these vital services to our customers.”
The Government said on Thursday that Health Secretary Matt Hancock would give immediate financial backing for all NHS trusts to provide free car parking to NHS staff for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Local Government Secretary has also agreed for local councils to offer free car parking to all NHS workers and social care staff during the coronavirus outbreak.
