NHS junior doctors to strike on three days next month

Junior doctors in England will strike for three days next month in the dispute over pay, the British Medical Association (BMA) has announced.

In a tweet on Friday morning, the BMA said: "Our 72-hour strike action will begin on Monday 13th March and conclude on the morning of Thursday 16th March. It'll involve a full stoppage of work, including nights, on-call shifts and non-resident work."

Part of a video accompanying the tweet featured BMA junior doctors committee co-chair Robert Laurenson saying: "Well done to each and every one of you who have voted for strike action.

"You have taken a stand for our profession, and you will stand up to this government. Turnout was unprecedented, the most junior doctors who have ever voted for strike action".

The "full 72 hour walkout" comes after NHS nurses and ambulance staff took industrial action earlier this month, and in January, in a bitter row over pay and working conditions.

Mr Laurenson added: "We would not be here if the government had come to the table to negotiate. But the 26.1% pay cut since 2008, combined with an insulting offer of a 2% increase during a cost of living crisis, is beyond the pale."
