NHS at 75: Gaucho and M Restaurants serve more than 5,000 free meals to staff

More than 5,000 three-course meals will be served to NHS staff free of charge today in celebration of 75 years of Britain’s health service.

Doctors, nurses, and other health professionals took advantage of an offer by the steak and grill venues Gaucho and M Restaurants, which invited NHS workers in for complimentary meals on July 5.

Gaucho and M Restaurants, both run by the restaurateur Martin Williams, specialise in Argentinian steak, with sites across the country.

Each one, including 17 in London, booked up with NHS staff almost immediately after the announcement earlier this week, and more than 3,500 meals were planned in the capital alone.

Williams promised those unable to make a reservation today — sittings were between noon and 6.30pm — would be able to visit in July and dine for half price.

He wouldn’t be drawn on how much the scheme has cost the group, but told the Standard it has invested a five figure sum, with support from his suppliers.

“We are delighted to celebrate NHS workers with this gesture,” he said.

“When at their best, restaurants are an integral part of the community and thus we are proud to support our amazing NHS heroes and hope other restaurants will follow suit to do the same.”

Medical professionals were invited to dine from the two brands’ set menus, with dishes such as sea bass ceviche, sirloin steaks, and affogato on offer.

The move comes as the NHS, which treats more than one million people every day and remains free at the point of delivery, celebrates the 75 year milestone.
