NFL fans called out John Lynch for saying the 49ers were ‘very happy’ with Trey Lance a day before trading him

Well, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch didn’t necessarily back up his public support of quarterback Trey Lance this week.

After trade reports began to swirl about Lance after he lost out on the 49ers’ backup quarterback job, Lynch pushed back on them by saying that Lance’s most likely option was staying right where he was in San Francisco.

While he did mention that a trade to the right landing spot was a distant possibility, Lynch still leaned in heavily on the idea that Lance was probably staying put in the Bay Area. His statement lost its validity just a day later.

“I think that’s the most likely option,” Lynch told San Francisco’s KNBR of keeping Lance. “As I said, we’re very happy with Trey. That’s probably the most likely option, is that he’s here. If we could find a landing spot for Trey, that is a really good one for him and works for our organization, that’s not something we turn a blind eye to.

“But that’s not where our focus is right now. I think our focus is on Trey getting back here and us being the best football team. We’re getting close to Pittsburgh, and that’s kind of where we’re at.”

Well, the team’s focus shifted plenty by trading Lance to the Dallas Cowboys on Friday evening for a fourth-round pick.

NFL fans quickly called shenanigans on Lynch’s misleading assessment of Lance’s status with the team, following a trend of general managers saying one thing about a player and doing another.

NFL fans saw right through this one.
