Week 7 was a terrible week for the Seattle Seahawks. They suffered a brutal 30-16 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens while their three division rivals all won their respective games.
The 49ers continued their defensive dominance, the Rams rebounded with a strong showing on both sides of the ball, and the Cardinals notched their third-straight victory.
Seattle’s margin for error is getting thinner as its rivals add to their win totals. With that said, let’s see how the Seahawks’ NFC West rivals fared in Week 7.
San Francisco 49ers 9 – Washington Redskins 0
The 49ers defense kept Washington scoreless on a very slippery FedEx Field. The offense didn’t get much going, partially due to the conditions. However, kicker Robbie Gould’s three field goals in the second half were enough to seize victory as the defense got several key stops and shut out Washington on the road.
Despite QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s interception, he contributed to the win by finding his receivers for a few first downs and running it himself when he needed to. He completed 12 of his 21 passes for 151 yards on the day while adding 20 rushing yards of his own.
The 49ers (6-0) will face the Panthers (4-2) next Sunday, pitting two NFC postseason contenders against each other.
Los Angeles Rams 37 – Atlanta Falcons 10
After three consecutive losses, the Rams (4-3) rebounded in a big way despite playing the mightily struggling Falcons (1-6). Jared Goff completed 22 of his 37 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another – a solid bounce-back for the fourth-year signal-caller. Todd Gurley was once again limited but caught a pass over his shoulder in the end zone for his first receiving TD since October 2018.
The Rams defense held firm, holding Atlanta’s talented offense to a mere 10 points, seven of which were scored when the game’s outcome was decided. Their new acquisition in cornerback Jalen Ramsey certainly assisted in that feat, largely shadowing the Falcons’ star receiver Julio Jones and forcing a fumble from Devonta Freeman when they needed a turnover. However, they also sacked Matt Ryan five times and limited Atlanta’s running game to under 40 rushing yards.
The Rams head to London to take on the winless Bengals (0-7) next week.
Arizona Cardinals 27 – New York Giants 21
Arizona’s defense was absolutely dominant, sacking Daniel Jones eight times and forcing three fumbles from him. They also got their first interception of the season when Jordan Hicks picked off Jones with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter and prevented Saquon Barkley from inflicting significant damage in his first game back from injury.
David Johnson’s injury did little to deter the Cardinals’ running game, as second-year running back Chase Edmonds rushed for 126 yards and all three of Arizona’s touchdowns. Kyler Murray completed 14 of his 21 passes for 104 yards and chipped in 28 yards on the ground.
This game was perhaps most notable for Giants head coach Pat Shurmur electing to go for it on a fourth and 15 on their own 33-yard line facing a three-point deficit with two timeouts and 2:35 to play. It certainly benefitted Arizona, who proceeded to strip the ball from Jones and recover it within New York’s 20-yard line. The Cardinals kicked a field goal to give them a 27-21 lead their defense would hold, and that would be the final score.
Next week, the Cardinals (3-3-1) will have a tough task as they travel to New Orleans to face the red-hot Saints (6-1), who have compiled a 4-0 record since Drew Brees went down with a thumb injury.
