Next Kilmarnock manager: League Cup winner Dieter Van Tornhout keen on Rugby Park vacancy

Kilmarnock League Cup winner Dieter Van Tornhout has applied for the Rugby Park managerial vacancy, the Kilmarnock Standard can exclusively reveal.

Killie cult hero Van Tornhout scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win against Celtic in the 2012 final which landed the club their first League Cup.

And now he's interested in repeating success in the Ayrshire side's dugout.

The Belgian striker, now 36, has no managerial experience but is highly thought of as a coach back home.

He has had staff roles at Club Brugge and most recently KV Mechelen, and now he's looking to reunite with former team-mate James Fowler who is head of football operations at Killie.

Van Tornhout has applied for the Rugby Park hot seat before but the board opted for Tommy Wright who has since been sacked.

At the time, he said: “I left Scotland due to circumstances.

“Antwerp were the team that wanted me most so I went there.

“But it has a rich history in Belgium although at that moment they were in the second tier. There wasn’t much money in the club so it’s a big difference when you compare to where they are now.

“After I finished playing I was assistant coach in Mechelen until a few months ago.

“An agent put my name forward to Kilmarnock but said because of the position they were in they wanted a more experienced coach. Maybe another opportunity will come up.”
