Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark has revealed she is having a nose job to stop her snoring and give her husband a good night sleep.
The Scot suffered a broken nose 27 years ago when her son James, then aged two, accidentally head butted her, and it left her unable to breathe through one nostril.
Kirsty didn’t seek help on the day it happened because she was in Glasgow at the time, it was the day of the Old Firm game and she didn’t fancy going to A&E.
But she has now decided to seek corrective surgery after her long-suffering husband Alan Clements, a Scottish television executive, advised her to do something about it.
Speaking on a BBC podcast, Kirsty 64, said: “Shall I tell you a secret? I am going to have a nose job.
“My nose has been broken for 27 years and I can only breathe out of one nostril, and I read a piece at the weekend about a woman who had a nose job because she could only breathe out of one side and I thought, I might be able to do that.”
Recalling the 1992 accident that left her with breathing difficulties, Kirsty said: “I was headbutted by my son, who was sitting in front of me, when he was two. I was reading him a story.
“There was an Old Firm match on so there was absolutely no chance in Glasgow I was going to A&E with basically a nosebleed.
So I went to the ear, nose and throat department on the following Monday.
“I saw a young doctor and she said, ‘Look, I’m going to move your nose across your face. I think that will open it up.’ “She literally put my head in this metal thing as if I were a knight going to one of the Crusades, stood behind me and tried to move my nose across my face. It was so sore, I was crying.
“A few days later it moved back, so I just left it there. It’s not much fun, especially when you’ve got a cold. And one of my secrets is that I snore.”
Dumfries-born Kirsty, who also has a daughter, Caitlin, told podcast presenters Jane Garvey and Fi Glover that it was Alan who suggested she finally get the problem fixed.
She said: “My husband said, ‘You know, I think you should go to the doctors about this’. I told him, ‘Why don’t you record my snoring and then I can take the recording to the doctors and ask them if they think it would help.’
“But can you imagine what it’s like on a train, or in any public space when I’m travelling and falling asleep?
“I think, ‘God, what if I snore my way through this?”
