Newslaundry wins two Laadli awards for reportage on Hathras, Yati Narsinghanand

The year is winding down, journalists are looking back at their work, and Newslaundry has received two more accolades for its journalism.

Newslaundry won in two categories in the 2022 edition of the Laadli Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity, instituted by Population First. The award ceremony took place in Hyderabad today.

Shivangi Saxena won the award in the Hindi web category for her report on Yati Narsinghanand and his army of believers, and how their favourite targets are Muslims and women. Their tools include YouTube videos, WhatsApp groups and Instagram posts, and they firmly believe this hatred is for a cause. Read the report here, published on August 31, 2021.

Nidhi Suresh won the award in the web report category for her report, “Hathras: Four months on, Dalit girl’s family lives between court hearings and with ostracism”. Published on January 6, 2021, the story detailed how the family of a Dalit woman, who was gangraped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, struggled to pick up the pieces after the media and police packed up and left.

“This is a house that functions mechanically,” the woman’s father said. “We sleep because it is night and we wake up because it is day.” Read the report here.

Nidhi and Newslaundry’s Akanksha Kumar were among the first to report on the Hathras case on the ground – and we followed up on the story in the two years that have passed. Check out our coverage here
