Newmarket races crowd trial cancelled after Boris Johnson stops return of spectators

Newmarket's three-day crowd trial has been cancelled on the back of fresh coronavirus restrictions from the government.

The Suffolk racecourse was due to welcome 1,000 spectators to its Cambridgeshire meeting on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed today that plans for spectators to return to sports venues from October 1 will not proceed as planned.

His decision comes amid further measures to limit the spread of coronavirus, as the UK's alert level was raised.

Newmarket's three-day fixture will now be held behind closed doors.

It becomes the third track to abandon a trial at a late stage, after Goodwood and Doncaster.

Amy Starkey, who runs Newmarket Racecourses as East Regional Director for Jockey Club Racecourses, said: “We respect the government’s decision to postpone its programme of spectator pilots across sport as part of trying to reduce interaction between people.

"Sadly, this means the Cambridgeshire meeting will take place without the limited number of spectators who the team worked so hard to prepare to welcome in a safe way.

"We will now continue to work with the rest of the industry, government and our local authority on when it might be possible for spectators to return in the future."

Cabinet Minister Michael Gove told BBC Breakfast that the country was not ready for a "mass reopening" of venues.

Warwick racecourse's trial on Monday was hailed as a success and the set-up was praised by many attendees.
